The Toll of Nobody

How it starts

A letter for Harrowfield. Warm, is it? Hm. Road's that way. Bell's that way.
That bell rings by itself at dusk. Nobody pulls it. The toll-keeper went to see why the light broke, in the Long Night. Didn't come back. His ledger's still in the booth. Read me who he let by.

This quest is meant to surprise you. Go and find Pike first.

What people tell you along the way

  1. Pike: “Read the ledger in the toll booth, over the Grovebridge.”
  2. Pike: “At dusk, stand by the toll booth with no light in your hand and listen for the bell. (By day the eaves are dark, and hungry for a light.)”
  3. Pike: “Tell Pike what rang the bell.”
  4. Pike: “An old frog with a coal. No toll taken. Bardo. Still owes me a copper. Well. Owes the bridge.”
Pike: “Quiet now. The flames have their lantern. The rope's just a rope again.”
Pike: “Ambrel kept the tolls in a tin. Hid it somewhere low, by the water. Never found it. Never looked. Low water at dawn shows you things.”
